TIDE/TIED - Works In Progress

T IDE/ T I E D RE/CONNECTING VIA WATER TIDE/TIED- RE/CONNECTING VIA WATER is a series of projects that re-connect people and their history via water. The first project, SAIL THE SHIP CLOSE TO ITS HOPE initiated by artist Nathalie Ferrier will help fundraise an elementary school in Mali. The project will start in the fall 2008 with an installation by the artist that will be shown at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, 321 Arsenal Street in Watertown, MA starting September 12, 2008. Opening Reception is on September 25, from 5:30 to 8 pm. Nathalie Ferrier's statement explains the motivation behind her installation piece: "For quite some time, I have felt that my artwork should be concerned with more than just promoting my ideas and concepts, as I have observed the increasing need for help all around me. It often seems that what costs me a little can go a long way and be quite significant to others. For that reason, I decided to use this opportunity at the Arsenal Art Center both to show my work and also to raise funds for the children of the Elementary School of Koulikoro, in Mali. I have traveled to Mali and other parts of Africa throughout my life. Once one has been there, there is a true connection that lasts forever. I have had steady contact over the past year with Mamadou Traoré, the Elementary School Director of Koulikoro. The children there will benefit greatly from whatever funds can be raised for books, notebooks, pens, pencils, art supplies… For this installation, I have crafted sails made out of woolen blankets and sewed pillows that will be displayed in the space. Each pillow represents a letter using the International Signal Code spelling out the title of the show. The title of the installation "SAIL THE SHIP CLOSE TO ITS HOPE" is taken from a line in a poem written by René Char. The pillows are on sale individually or in groups. Each pillow is sold for $150.00. All profits will be sent to the school." “SAIL THE SHIP CLOSE TO ITS HOPE” will be on view in the Arsenal gallery from September 12 until November 16, 2008. The opening reception is on Thursday, September 25, from 5:30 until 9:00 pm. Artists will attend.
